Posted by Jeffrey Blake on Sunday, December 13, 2009, In : Green Jobs
A lot of promising news out there.

sustainable jobs

With unemployment numbers finally inching in the right direction, President Obama announced a broad new spending strategy Tuesday that he hopes can grow this economic “green shoot” into green jobs.

Speaking at the Brookings Institution following a White House jobs summit and a trip through Pennsylvania steel country, Obama outlined ideas for a new federal stimulus that would focus largely on small businesses and greener infrastructure projects, s...

If Only Hand Wringing Created Green Jobs

Posted by Jeffrey Blake on Sunday, December 6, 2009, In : Green Jobs
There have been a fair number of mainstream news articles expressing concern that the many promised green collar jobs created with stimulus funding are not appearing. These pieces often follow a certain hackneyed formula, citing a huge dollar figure from legislation passed earlier this year and then pointing to the fact that only a few workers have been hired. There are a number of problems with these reports that should cause readers to reserve their judgment on how the green jobs effort is ...

Green movement shows job-generating potential

Posted by Jeffrey Blake on Sunday, December 6, 2009, In : Green Jobs
The "green jobs" movement in the Hudson Valley is young, but real, and will grow in coming years, speakers at a conference said Friday.
To help that growth, a focus is needed on improving educational systems to help emerging industries. Also, solutions are needed to unlock financing that green businesses, which are mostly small, require to grow.

About 150 people attended the Green 2010 conference held at the Cary Institute for Ecosystems Studies. It was the fifth annual event, but this one ca...

The Jobs Summit: Opportunity To Forge A New Social Contract

Posted by Jeffrey Blake on Monday, November 30, 2009, In : Jobs
Current data on jobs and wages show why workers rightly feel they are being left out of the economic recovery. Unemployment is at a quarter century high and the Congressional Budget Office predicts that unless stronger actions are taken, unemployment will remain above 10% in 2010, 9% in 2011, and 7% in 2012. This means that between 15 to 20% of the nation's human capital will remain unemployed, underemployed, or out of the labor force for the next three years -- clearly an unacceptable outc...

Get Green Jobs Using Twitter

Posted by Jeffrey Blake on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, In : Twitter

I have been researching ways to twitter for jobs.  We know that employers are bypassing the cost of advertising jobs in Dice and Monster and are appealing directly to social media sites.

twitterjobsearch.com is a neat new application that allows you to set your job parameters and search Twitter for positions based on time and location.  I enrolled and was searching for jobs within 2 minutes.  It has a very easy interface and seems quite useful.

Gray is the New Green

Posted by Jeffrey Blake on Saturday, July 18, 2009, In : Green Jobs

It turns out that there are a  lot of loose definitions on what constitutes a "green" job.  With so much money being diverted there are many jobs being re-classified green to take advantage of the cash.   We are going to do a better job of defining what is a green job and what is not if we want to prevent waste and fraud.   .... read more

A Broader View of Sustainability

Posted by Jeffrey Blake on Saturday, July 11, 2009, In : Sustainability
Sustainability is more than just going solar.  We have to look at the whole picture and the history of an area.

At Hunters Point Shipyard and Candlestick Point, "sustainability" means directly acknowledging the economic role the Shipyard played in the Bayview Hunters Point community's history and the devastating impacts of its closure in 1974 on that community, as well as the impacts of a persistent unwillingness by private capital to invest in the area. ... read more

What is a Green Job?

Posted by Jeffrey Blake on Sunday, July 5, 2009, In : Green Collar Jobs

Green-collar jobs are a growing part of the U.S. economy. As heavy demand has risen for clean energy and environmentally responsible manufacturing - workers are building everything from hybrid cars to organic tee-shirts.

A green-collar worker is a person who uses new environmental technologies for consumers, designing and manufacturing goods that use less materials and  energy than those of just a year ago. Environmental groups from the Sierra Club to the League of Conservation Voters say thes...

Energy job losers could get windfall

Posted by Jeffrey Blake on Friday, July 3, 2009, In : Energy Job
George Miller

Workers who lose their jobs if the pending climate change legislation becomes law could get a weekly paycheck for up to three years, subsidies to find new work and other generous benefits -- all courtesy of Uncle Sam -- under a little-noticed provision of the bill.

Touted by its House Democratic authors as a jobs engine, the bill offers extraordinary compensation for those who would lose their paycheck as a consequence of its passage.  ... read more

Renewable Rnergy is Building Momentum in Canada

Posted by Jeffrey Blake on Friday, July 3, 2009, In : Renewable Energy

It's not a surprising decision. While other sectors have contracted or slowed, he says, renewable energy is "building momentum," supported not just by a pressing environmental imperative but by investments such as federal solar energy rebates and Ontario's Green Energy Act, which promises to create 50,000 jobs within three years, support alternative energy industries and make the province North America's renewable energy leader. "The possibilities of sustainable energy are enormous," agree...
